A few weeks ago, I wrote a LinkedIn post inspired by a New York Times column from Thomas Friedman that was sent to me by my friend Bill Ury.
It talked about the poverty of dignity we’re experiencing in the world. I have been thinking about that a lot lately, especially in how it dovetails with our message of Truly Human Leadership and creating a workplace and a world where everybody matters.
This brought me to Donna Hicks, author, conflict resolution specialist and Harvard professor who wrote the book, Leading With Dignity. Recently we had a lengthy conversation. On the topic of dignity and leadership in our workplaces, Donna wrote:
"I have often found that leaders of organizations do not have a working knowledge of dignity and the role it plays in our lives and relationships. The leaders with whom I have worked are good people, but before I arrived they generally had little understanding of dignity and were harming their employees dignity without knowing it."
On this week’s Everybody Matters Podcast, Brent Stewart and Mary Rudder have a conversation with Donna where she unpacks many of the issues with dignity and leadership – what dignity really is and how leaders can restore and honor our dignity.
